Sponsored Conservatism
Sponsored Conservatism
The Landscape of National Conservative Organizations
This chapter focuses on the right-leaning, national-level organizations that sponsor conservatism on college campuses. In particular, it looks at three prominent national conservative organizations specifically set up to mobilize undergraduates for conservative action: the Young America's Foundation, the Leadership Institute, and the Intercollegiate Studies Institute. The chapter first discusses the populist activism of the Young America's Foundation and the Leadership Institute as well as the Intercollegiate Studies Institute's refined brand of conservatism before assessing the variety of offerings on hand from each of these organizations to see how they try to foster college conservatism. The goal is to elucidate the spectrum of styles that are available to conservative students in colleges and universities. The messsage that these organizations relay to students is that “you need us because your college or university is not exposing you to intellectual diversity.”
