The Affair of the Corsair

The Affair of the Corsair

(p.176) The Affair of the Corsair
A Short Life of Kierkegaard

Walter Lowrie

Princeton University Press

This chapter recounts “the affair of the Corsair.” The Corsair was a comic paper founded by Aaron Goldschmidt. It paid “a glittering honorarium” to disloyal servants for betraying the secrets of the home, and its real editors hid behind blackguards who were ready to suffer the penalties of the law for libel. All reputable men declared that it was a scandal which out to be abated—yet secretly read it with malicious enjoyment. Kierkegaard, they said, was the man to attack it, because he was so completely independent. And indeed Kierkegaard had done so, despite the respect Goldschmidt otherwise held for him—as the chapter shows, the affair might have been averted had both men spoken frankly with each other.
