Death and Burial
Death and Burial
October 2 to November 18, 1855
This chapter chronicles Kierkegaard's final moments as well as his subsequent burial. After falling unconscious on October 2, 1855 and suffered paralysis in his legs thereafter, Kierkegaard was admitted to Frederik's Hospital, where he died after forty days. The chapter details the more intimate moments of his time at the hospital, adding to his deathbed scenes the impressions made by his relatives upon visiting him there. It then describes the aftermath of his death on November 11. His burial was handled somewhat ineptly, and the funeral ceremonies, as this chapter shows, were beset with some difficulties—so much so that no one knows precisely where he was buried in the family lot.
