Let me return briefly to the crime scene of the prologue. I went back later that December Friday to see the whale’s body again. Hurrying with trepidation and excitement, I came up to the bank of sand dunes that overlooked its sandy open grave where I had stood, awestruck, that morning. This wretched, ransacked body, so lifeless a few hours earlier, was moving. Silenced by confusion and shock then laughing with a mixture of revulsion and relief at this magic realist sight, I understood my mistake. The tide had come in so that the water was just high enough to almost cover the whale but not enough to wash it away, so that it remained tethered to the beach by its own weight, whilst its tail and what remained of its head swayed and crashed like a circus animal trying to break free from its cage....
