This chapter examines how in India, there is no real reflection of Alexander in the arts of Gandara in the early centuries CE, where memory of classical Indo-Greek and Parthianizied forms and subjects remained strong though far divorced from their sources. Persian and Arab adoption of Iskander/Alexander had its effect far to the east and, naturally enough, into Mughal India. There has been some doubt about whether in Indian languages “Skanda” refers to him. Apart from the real legacy of his conquests, Alexander was also easily inserted into Indian history by some writers without much regard to any evidence or even tradition.
