The White Problem in America

The White Problem in America

(p.177) 10 The White Problem in America
Creatures of Cain

This chapter turns to anthropological efforts to approach the question of violence in American cities, which is inextricably entwined with preconceptions about race. At issue were the root causes of urban unrest, why it had started, and ultimately who should be held responsible. Analogical reasoning from anthropological studies of other cultures and zoological explorations of violence in animals played an important role in these debates which attempted to make sense of the social chaos of the time. This chapter presents arguments that present social policies were dividing the country into ever-more separate societies, with white society itself being the one to instigate and condone such situations.
